The most enjoyable aspect of this initially entertaining and ultimately disturbing novel is the interplay of their various voices – dialogues so carefully pitched that you’ll swear you heard “Love, etc.
Conveniently, all the parts are labeled, so it’s clear from the start Cupid was shooting poison darts when he spied the characters in “Love, etc.
This book is a continuation of another book by Barnes, Talking it Overwhere we are first introduced to the trio.
It punches you in the gut. True, he did make a fuss at their subsequent wedding, and spied on them in their French village; but he was agreeable about the divorce, moved to America, remarried jupian, prospered, then returned to London shortly after Oliver and Gillian, avec les enfantsdid.
Where he was once considered plain, awkward, he is reborn confident and wealthy. Barnes’ writing is witty and catchy. The narrators addressed the reader directly. One of the main characters, Stuart, has been left by his first wife, Gillian, who is now married to his best friend. Following an education at the City of London School Julian Patrick Barnes is a contemporary English writer of postmodernism in literature. The book loses its playfulness but does not gain enough seriousness, and so remains, for me undefined and unsatisfactory.
Re-enter Stuart, and thus the situation progresses.
